Have you ever received a birthday present that you never really wanted? A pair of colored socks, a book about how to ace your SATs, or one of those practical gifts (i.e. a set of light-bulbs). Now, have you ever received a birthday gift, that really wasn’t even a gift for YOU at all? It all started with a birthday party in September 2008. For Scott Harrison’s 31st birthday, instead of getting people to bring gifts to his party, he asked for everyone to bring $20. In the end, all the money that was brought to the party was spent on funding six new wells for clean drinking water in a refugee camp in Uganda. Clean water is something that we in the Westernized world have taken for granted, but for those in less developed countries, it’s something they struggle with access to on a daily basis. Now THAT’S a birthday present that keeps on giving. I’m not sure about you, but I know how I’m spending my birthday party this year.
