Laser Graffiti

There’s nothing like a good aerosol can, but for those who don’t feel like incriminating themselves with paint on their hands, there’s a new way of putting up graffiti. Gather a projector, a camera, a laptop and a laser pointer, and you could put up a piece on any heaven spot that your heart desires. How about these buildings at the University of Toronto….?

Here’s another laser graffiti piece done on what looks like a 20 story building in Holland by the Graffiti Research Lab . Using a bit of graffiti terminology, these guys are calling it L.A.S.E.R tag, where tagging refers to stylized graffiti scribbles. If you check out their website, they also have a whole suite of free tools dedicated to “urban communication”, so you can easily set this up at home with a few tools.

It’s definitely a trend to play with buildings using projectors (check this post) , but with laser graffiti, you can interact with buildings directly without having to draw it out on the computer or a separate tablet prior to projection. It’s also catching on in popularity across the world. Here’s another video from Spain by Cubensis (Sorry, it’s in Spanish).

Yes, the work might not be permanent and you might not be able to leave any legacy, but hey, it’s still priceless seeing the faces of people staring at your work on a twenty story building from across the city.
