If you live in the city, I am sure you have seen people hanging midway along the exterior walls of skyscrapers, and you wonder what they are doing up there. Are they cleaning the windows, doing some maintenance work, or just watching people down below who have no idea they are being observed…?
This is a short documentary film by The Ritual Project, about a group of New York City painters, who hand paint advertisements spanning entire sidewalls of brick buildings! Today, all we see are vinyl prints hanging down the buildings which after their pre-determined lifespans, come down without a trace and a new piece quickly goes up to replace it. Little do we remember the faded paint of old hand painted advertisements that vaguely resemble the surface and texture of the brick walls, leaving a mark on the history of that building. Luckily, a small group of NYC artists are keeping the craft alive, Up There.
