Volkswagens Fun Theory Campaign

Bob’s alarm goes off at 8 in the morning. He washes up, gets dressed for work and like a typical workday morning, he does not have enough time for breakfast. He takes the car to work and gets caught up in the always reliable early morning rush hour. Bob arrives at work and begins the 9-5 workday. The end of the workday doesn’t come soon enough and he’s back in his car stuck in the late afternoon rush hour on the way back home. After a less than appetizing dinner, a few sitcom reruns, Bob heads to bed ready to start the next day. Rinse and repeat.

While this may not be an accurate representation of your own life, we can all agree Bob could use a little more ‘fun’ in his life. In fact, I’m sure we all could use a little more fun in our lives. Volkswagen agrees. They have been sponsoring entrepreneurs to develop ideas on their Fun Theory: that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better.

I came across a bunch of really neat products the other day and I was deciding how I should share them with you. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought why not make a Valentine’s Day gift guide to showcase these awesome goodies! Mind you, I wanted to buy all these things for myself, and creating a gift guide is my way of justifying these purchases.. (Wasn’t Christmas just two months ago? sigh.) Anyway, here is my round-up of some great gift ideas that are practical, yet fun to have!

Where was this when I went to Ecuador in December? On a recent trip down south, we were trying to learn Spanish in a matter of weeks so we’d survive while communicating in South America. Having this translator app with us on our trip would have definitely made the journey slightly easier I’d think. Though our trusty dictionary and ‘frequent phrases’ guide was useful, I’m sure if we had discovered Word Lens by Quest Visual sooner, we’d be much happier campers. Regret aside, sharing is caring, so perhaps if you are planning a journey to a foreign country in the next little while, this app may just be what you need!

Paintlounge: Everyone is an Artist

Vidafine was recently invited to the launch party for Paintlounge, a new tea shop that offers canvas painting as entertainment to its patrons. The concept is relatively simple, you purchase a modestly priced empty canvas, use the provided tools and paints and start creating your art masterpiece. Take all the time you need to paint your canvas and when you’re finished, you get to take it home with you and brighten up that plain white wall.

Now that is magical. I am referring to the above short film by BERG and Dentsu London, a creative exploration of the theme ‘making future magic’.

In a world that is increasingly populated with electronic displays of various sizes, it’s hard to imagine how city life would be without these ‘glowing rectangles’. Or, on the other hand, what would media look like beyond exploring the world though these two-dimensional portals? So starting with a device that embodies many aspects of modern media, the team has created this stop-motion film not on the iPad, but with the iPad.

As the marketplace (for pretty much everything) becomes more competitive, differentiation comes in many forms. In the case of organizations which deal with customer interaction, specifically retailers, differentiation through unique user experiences seem to be the solution in breaking free from the pack. In my last visit to Seoul, I witnessed a handful of retailers, brands and corporations who thought outside of the proverbial box and really experimented with new ways to enhance the experience for patrons.

I always wondered how my life would play out on film-in a non-celebrity kind of way. I mean, I don’t want to sound self-absorbed, but wouldn’t you be interested in capturing your life story? Perhaps recalling moments with your loved ones, learning about your heritage or sharing lessons learned? I’ve often tried to keep a journal of life’s memorable moments, but sometimes fail to update it on a weekly basis as I’m sure some of you can relate to. However, when StoryCorps was presented to me recently (their animated shorts are my favourite, which are based on their best-loved radio stories), I discovered a glimmer of hope towards preserving what I’ve been hoping to capture all along!
