With the end of 2010 fast approaching, students scrambling to study for exams while others rushing to meet deadlines, who doesn’t need a little break amidst all the stress? Perhaps a pillow fight to release some of that stress will entertain you. How about LED light-saber battles with hundreds of new friends? Maybe, during these cold winter months, curtain forts or a warm smooch will do the trick. Newmindspace organizes such events that bring people together in Toronto and New York in hope to create a public interactive art movement using the city as their urban playground. What will they do next?!
Newmindspace is a project that started in 2005 by Lori Kufner from Toronto and Kevin Bracken, originally from Long Island New York. Now headquartered in New York, they continue to successfully bring people together to realize their vision of a community.
Known for organizing free and fun events for all ages year round in Toronto and New York, Newmindspace has been the catalyst in coordinating parties on subway cars, public pillow fights, giant games of capture the flag on city streets, massive bubble battles, public art installations and much more. They have helped to better define the term urban playground and have solidified it as a movement. They are hoping to continuously and positively engage individuals to wake communities up!
When was the last time you stopped and looked at the people on the street as you pass by them? With a busy lifestyle, it’s easy to rush from point A to point B without regard for what’s happening around you. Events like these help to free the mind and the spirit. So what event is next on the agenda for Newmindspace?
Tuesday Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, they have organized The Big Kiss in Toronto’s Dundas Square. At 6:00pm ET, individuals gathered at the space will participate in a massive, simultaneous kiss under Dundas Squares’ new adornment (a giant mistletoe perhaps?!) They suggest you can kiss anyone or anything! A teddy bear, your phone, a friend? What’s even more amazing is that Virgin Mobile also got in touch with Newmindspace (because they love the idea so much) and will be donating $5 to Newmindspace’s favourite charity (World Wildlife Foundation) for every kiss that occurs after 6:00pm that day at the event! So if you are around town on Thursday, make sure to drop by and share in the fun and the gift of giving.
If your teddy bear doesn’t want your kiss, perhaps their next event (blanket forts) is for you =)
These simple ideas are making big impacts. So what event ideas do you have for Newmindspace in the new year? Get in touch with them on Facebook or Twitter. Not in Toronto or New York? Maybe you can organize similar events your communities to bring people together! Let’s start spreading the community love!
